Work Underway on Benioff's Presidio Middle School Bequest

Back in 2015, it became known that Marc Benioff would be paying for a re-do of San Francisco's Presidio Middle School. The elegant and somewhat underappreciated 1930 Deco-style building on 30th Avenue in the Richmond District features a soul-deadening large asphalt play yard that seems to suck literal time and space from the surrounding neighborhood into its vortex. Sometime in June or July, work began on the student-designed "Best Schoolyard in the Universe." Asphalt was busted up, and sand exposed. Some amount of foundational work appears to be underway. The wall dividing the upper playground from lower was either sandblasted or replaced entirely. Today's visit by yours truly found between five and ten men in neon reflective vests still hard at work in late afternoon. The sign at the site says it will be done in 2019.
